Dental caries and treatment modalities

Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, is a common oral health problem caused by the breakdown of tooth enamel by acid produced by bacteria in the mouth. The acid can demineralize the enamel, leading to the formation of cavities.

The main cause of dental caries is poor oral hygiene, which can lead to the buildup of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth and gums, and if it is not removed by regular brushing and flossing, it can produce acid that erodes the enamel.

The treatment of dental caries depends on the severity of the decay. In the early stages, when the cavity is small, the decayed area of the tooth can be removed and replaced with a filling made of composite resin, porcelain, or amalgam.

If the decay is more extensive, a dental crown may be necessary to restore the shape and function of the tooth. In severe cases, when the decay has reached the pulp of the tooth, a root canal procedure may be necessary to remove the infected tissue and save the tooth.

Preventing dental caries is key to maintaining good oral health. This can be achieved through regular brushing and flossing, limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
